The individual MKV files remain in that folder. The video is David Gilmour Live At Pompeii which I ripped from my Bluray and then used DaVInci Resolve to tack every individual MKV file into the full length concert video MP4 file at high quality settings hence the large file size. This shortened file started to play at exactly the same point in time as a smaller backup MKV file in the same folder.

The older HD Apple TV (4th gen.) used to play that same 28 gig file prior to upgrading VLC recently, but after one of the upgrades (I don't know which because the Apple TV is set to update apps automatically so this may have started with an earlier version than 3.3.4) it seemed to cut off the first 1.5+ hours of the 2.75 hour file which I could not understand at first as I was not aware that VLC had upgraded.

All my files are stored on a QNAP NAS so that I can play them on the Apple TVs in 2 rooms and on Macs in another 2 rooms. I have only tested it with a 28 gig mp4 file and it works as it should. So here are two ways to perform a lossless conversion of MKV into MP4.I have 2 Apple TVs. I guess their justification is that they only need to support the formats that cameras record in.Īnyway, given I was working with H.264 video and AAC audio, I knew I should be able to put multiplex into a MP4 (or even MOV) container to make it compatible with Davinci Resolve.Ī quick Internet search found crazy posts and videos where people are using tools that perform a lossy conversion, or and perhaps even worse installing "special" software to do the job (which could contain some form of malware).įrankly I don't want to be installing special software, not when there are open source utilities that will do the job, utilities I already have installed on my computer. For what it's worth it looks like other NLE software like Adobe Premiere Pro does not support it either. Shame on them, I would have expected them to adopt open standards like Matroska. Unfortunately the Davinci Resolve media pool just ignores files with that extension. MKV files are my go-to container format simply because of the convenience, given that there are utilities provided for muxing/demuxing and it supports any video or audio formats you want to use within the container. Recently I discovered that Davinci Resolve (NLE and Color Grading software) is incapable of reading MKV ("Matroska" multimedia container) files.
